Vision Statement

At Humberston Church of England Primary School, we aim for our children to gain the wisdom, knowledge and transferable skills to flourish in a range of subject areas.  Through the teaching and learning of Religious Education we aim to provide our children with a developing understanding of, and respect for, a range of world views, preparing them to navigate their way through life in a diverse modern Britain. Religious Education will provide a range of enriching experiences and opportunities to unlock unique possibilities during children’s time with us, such as visits to places of worship and hands on workshops in school led by a range of faith leaders. 

 

 

Curriculum Intent

We recognise that there are a variety of both religious and non religious backgrounds making up our school community and we welcome all in line with our Christian character. Religious Education is a valued subject in our school and one of the opportunities we use to develop children's understanding of a range of world views, preparing them for life in a diverse modern Britain. Religious Education (RE) in our school is intended to support pupils in considering and responding to important questions related to their own spiritual development, in developing an acceptance and understanding of other world views and in the ability to hold informed conversations relating to belief. RE in our school is delivered in an objective, critical and pluralist manner. Our main aim is to ignite a curiosity to learn about, and from, religion that will help children understand about faiths, beliefs and how religion has influenced both the development of mankind and the society in which we live. We encourage tolerance and respect for other cultures and faiths, acknowledging that our pupils are part of a multi-cultural society.

 

We intend:

1. To help all children develop an understanding of religion, faith and belief.
2. To enable children to learn about key religious leaders and their impact on our lives.
3. To develop children’s knowledge and understanding of the growth, development and influence of Christianity and other world faiths on history, society and our lives today.
4. To give children opportunities to question religion and discern the positive and negative elements.
5. To provide children with the opportunities to reflect upon and express their thoughts, views and opinions of beliefs and faiths.
6. To develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed for living together well in a multicultural and diverse society.
7. To develop children’s religious literacy, so that they can hold informed conversations about religion with others.
8. To provide opportunities to visit places of worship in the local community to develop a understanding of the diversity within our area.

 

Curriculum Implementation

We use a highly sequential curriculum designed by the Lincoln diocese Board of Education which includes robust Medium Term Plans have to ensure coverage, progression and revisitation of key religious concepts. We establish meaningful links with the other subjects of the curriculum and ensure that we are in line with the Church of England Education Office’s Statement of Entitlement through regular monitoring of the subject. 

 

• Our robust curriculum enables pupils to understand the nature of Christian beliefs and practices and compare and contrast them with the beliefs and practices of other world faiths;
• It teaches respect and tolerance and challenges prejudice towards people of different faiths through providing opportunities to develop an understanding of the value of living in a multicultural, multi-faith and multi-lingual society;
• It is enquiry based, giving children opportunities question theology and philosophy, make connections and draw their own conclusions.
• It engages with religious text, and is taught through a careful combination of philosophy, theology and human/social sciences.
• It is taught through an exploration of key concepts and enquiry questions.
• It encourages pupils to develop open minds to new and different concepts and form their own opinions;
• We learn from religions in addition to gaining knowledge and understanding about religions.
• Cross curricular links are be developed when appropriate, and RE will contribute to British values and SMSC development.
• At every opportunity teachers will use first-hand experience, visits, visitors, artefacts and the local and wider environment to engage children’s interest and imagination.
• Through their understanding of the different faiths and beliefs, children will be encouraged to develop their feelings, empathy and understanding for others.
• Through their understanding of religious education, learners will be helped to develop an understanding of the diverse society in which they live.
• We use financial resources to build up an extensive collection of resources, artefacts and books to support the teaching of religious education.
