Vision Statement

 

Through teaching and learning, we want our children to have the curiosity, knowledge and skills to make the most of what our rich society has to offer. It is our hope that our children will understand the complexities of people’s lives, the process of change and the diversities of societies that exist in school, their community and further afield. 

 

Through the teaching and learning of History we aim to provide our children with a range of experiences to unlock unique possibilities and opportunities during their time with us.  We seek to inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past, providing hands on experiences using historical artefacts and visiting immersive historical venues and events.   

 

 

Curriculum Intent

 

At the Humberston Church of England Primary School we believe that history shapes the customs and beliefs of communities. Our welcoming and inclusive school is devoted to nurturing a community where all feel confident in their responsibility to effect positive change in the diverse and modern world we share. History is about real people who lived, and real events which happened in the past. History is concerned with sequence, time and chronology and is the study of evidence about the past; it gives us a sense of identity, set within our social, political, cultural and economic relationships.  History fires our curiosity about the past in Britain and the wider world and plays an essential role in providing a holistic education that prepares our children for living and working in the contemporary world.  Pupils consider how the past influences the present, what past societies were like, how these societies organised their politics, and what beliefs and cultures influenced people’s actions. As they do this, pupils develop a chronological framework for their knowledge of significant events and people. They see the diversity of human experience, and understand more about themselves as individuals and members of society.  What they learn will empower staff and children to unlock their sense of self-worth, respect and spirituality. In history, pupils find evidence, weigh it up and reach their own conclusions. To do this they need to be able to research, sift through evidence, and argue for their point of view. Thus preparing our pupils with the tools, skills and fervour to flourish.
