Year 6 Learning Gallery
In Year 6, we have had an excellent start to the year. It has been a jam-packed, fun-filled first few weeks where the children have enjoyed a variety of lessons and team building exercises.
In music, we have been learning how to play the samba drums, performing as an ensemble, and have started our unit on the ukulele. We are hoping to be able to showcase our playing abilities at the end of the term!
We have delved into our topic ‘Extreme Earth’ by exploring the structure of the Earth. To help us to understand this tricky concept, we used a hard-boiled egg to visualise the different layers. This knowledge helped us to learn how earthquakes happen and their cause and impact. We studied the Morocco earthquake, which has occurred recently, and discussed what we, and others around the world, can do to make a difference to those who have been affected by this natural disaster.
Year 5 Anglo-Saxon Hook Day
Anglo-Saxon Invasion
In Year 5, we enjoyed an Anglo-Saxon day which began with reenacting rowing across as Angles, Saxons and Jutes to invade Britain. We shared our previous learning about the Romans and the impact they had on Britain, from military structures such as forts and walls including the spectacular Hadrian's Wall, to roads, baths, aqueducts and their impressive buildings. However, since the Romans left and Britain no longer had the strong Roman army to defend it from the invaders, we could row across and invade Britain.
Anglo-Saxon Houses and Place Names
We enjoyed locating Anglo-Saxon place names in an atlas and learned that the name 'England" is derived from the name "Englaland, which means 'land of the Angles'. We looked at Anglo-Saxon houses which we found were very different to the Roman era.
